Attacks on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure

According to TSN.ua: In October 2025, Russian forces launched their ninth large-scale assault on the thermal power plants operated by the Ukrainian energy company DTEK. This ongoing campaign has resulted in significant damage to equipment and has inflicted casualties among energy sector workers. Since the full-scale invasion began, DTEK's thermal power stations have been targeted in more than 220 separate attacks, highlighting a sustained effort to cripple the nation's power grid.

The most recent attack left 59 energy workers wounded, four of whom died from their injuries. Further casualties were reported in early 2026, with two more workers killed while on duty. Among those killed was an employee of 'Kyivteploenergo' who died in Kyiv on January 14 during the unloading of a generator, and Oleksiy Brekht, a former head of 'Ukrenergo', who was killed in the Kyiv region on January 21. These incidents underscore the extreme dangers faced by personnel trying to maintain Ukraine's critical energy supply.

Impact on Energy Infrastructure

These systematic strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure demonstrate the continuation of hostilities and their severe, detrimental effect on the resilience of the national power system. The loss of life among energy workers is not only a tragedy for their families but also jeopardizes the stability of electricity supply for civilians and industry alike, creating a cascading humanitarian and economic crisis.

Such attacks threaten to have long-term consequences for the recovery and future development of Ukraine's energy sector, which is vital for the country's stability during the ongoing conflict.
