Ukraine's Heating Infrastructure Targeted in Attack

According to TSN.ua: On February 3, 2023, a Russian attack crippled heating systems in Kyiv and Kharkiv, cutting off heat for tens of thousands of households. This assault on critical civilian infrastructure occurred during a severe winter cold snap. In the capital, over 1,100 residential buildings lost heating, creating a dire situation for residents. In Kharkiv, heat supply was temporarily suspended for 110,000 subscribers, with an additional 15,000 consumers affected in the Lozova district of the region.

To restore heating in Kyiv, 1,122 specialists have been mobilized, including 554 who arrived from other regions and from Ukrzaliznytsia brigades. The city's mayor, Oleksiy Kuleba, stated the situation remains complex, emphasizing that all efforts are focused on rapidly reconnecting residents to the heating network.

Attack's Impact on the Energy Grid

Overnight on February 3rd, the Russian Federation launched a mass attack on the energy systems of eight Ukrainian regions. Combined heat and power plants (CHPPs) and thermal power plants (TPPs) were struck, directly causing the subsequent heating supply failures. Temperatures at the time plunged to -25°C (-13°F), dramatically worsening conditions for affected residents.

This attack is part of a broader Russian strategy aimed at destabilizing Ukraine's energy infrastructure, particularly during harsh winter conditions.

Restoring heat is critically important for the safety and comfort of citizens suffering the consequences of war. The efforts of Ukrainian specialists in repairing the energy system demonstrate their readiness to respond to emergencies and maintain city operations under extreme duress.
