Power Loss at Kharkiv Nuclear Facility Following Russian Strikes Raises Safety Concerns.
Attacks on Ukraine's Energy Grid
According to TSN.ua: Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure are jeopardizing the operation of nuclear sites, particularly in Kharkiv, where a subcritical nuclear assembly lost its power supply. In the early hours of March 12, Russian strikes damaged an electrical substation near the facility at the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, creating a critical situation. By March 13, the installation was running solely on generators, sparking serious safety fears.
The emergency in Kharkiv reflects a broader pattern affecting other nuclear sites across Ukraine. At the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the facility relied entirely on a backup power line for several hours in early March. Since the war began, the Zaporizhzhia plant has experienced a complete loss of external power at least 12 times, posing major operational risks. On March 14, one of the power lines at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant was disconnected due to an attack, further highlighting the fragility of the current situation.
Implications for Nuclear Safety
Power supply disruptions carry severe consequences for nuclear safety. As Rafael Mariano Grossi noted,
“the instability of the ZNPP, given the limited options for external power supply, imposes constraints on the maintenance of electrical equipment.”These incidents underscore how grid instability and vulnerable external power sources affect nuclear safety. Additionally, drones have been spotted near the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, with one detected less than a kilometer from the station, signaling growing threats.
In light of these events, the situation surrounding Ukraine's energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities remains extremely tense. Amid the ongoing war, ensuring the safety of nuclear installations has become critically important to prevent potential catastrophic outcomes.
These developments highlight the urgent need to strengthen Ukraine's energy infrastructure, especially during armed conflict. A loss of power at nuclear plants could lead to severe environmental and humanitarian consequences, underscoring the necessity for international support and effective measures to maintain stability in the region.
