Ecological Disaster Strikes Odesa Bay

According to TSN.ua: An ecological disaster occurred in Odesa Bay in December 2025, killing over 1,000 birds. The oil spill, which resulted from a Russian strike on the "Pivdennyi" (Southern) port, contaminated 150 km of coastline, including the "Tuzlivski Lymany" National Park. Despite the efforts of volunteers, they managed to save only about 20% of the affected birds. This incident highlights the severe environmental toll of the ongoing conflict in the region.

According to reports, oil slicks covering a total area of up to 5,000 square meters were recorded at the 28th kilometer of the "Tuzlivski Lymany" sand barrier. The incident has raised significant concern among ecologists and activists as a major threat to local wildlife. During three days of surveys, scientists did not find a single Black Sea seahorse, indicating the oil spill's likely negative impact on marine life in the area.

Urgent Action Required

This tragedy underscores the severity of the situation in Odesa Bay and the urgent need for action to rescue the ecosystem. Ecologists and volunteers continue to work on restoring bird populations and taking measures to clean the polluted territories.

Environmental disasters like this one emphasize the vulnerability of coastal ecosystems during military conflicts. Oil spills not only harm animals but also affect the overall state of the environment, which can have long-term consequences for the region's biodiversity. Restoring the ecosystem will require efforts not only from local activists but also from the international community to prevent similar incidents in the future.
