Death in Great Britain: man strangled by home clothes dryer.
According to ТСН: A 38-year-old man died in Yorkshire, England, while performing routine household chores. The coroner described the circumstances of his death as extremely rare, even rarer than lightning strikes or meteorite falls.
The tragedy occurred on February 1, 2011, when Brian Depledge, a father of two, was spending time in the living room of his home, hanging wet laundry after the rain. For this, he used an indoor dryer — a popular foldable rack.
Suddenly, while hanging the laundry, the man fell, and the structure of the dryer collapsed, covering him. During the investigation, it became clear that Brian was trapped in the frame of the dryer.
Detective Inspector Mark Long, who testified in the case, noted that the plastic crossbars of the dryer tightly encompassed the man's torso and neck. His attempts to escape only complicated the situation, as movements created additional pressure on the body. The police described this mechanism as the 'cat's cradle effect,' where the elements of the structure create extra pressure during movement.
Consultant pathologist Dr. Philip Batman reported in court that the nature of the injuries indicated asphyxiation, similar to hanging. The deceased had deep indentations on his chest and neck, as well as congestion in the lungs, indicating suffocation.
After the investigation was completed, coroner Professor Paul Marks delivered a verdict of accidental death, emphasizing that he had never encountered a similar case and acknowledged the exceptional rarity of such circumstances.
Brian Depledge's death was a heavy blow to his family. At the time of the tragedy, his son Ryan was 11 years old, and his daughter Shauna was 18. Relatives later shared their feelings of shock and the difficulties in coming to terms with the loss of a husband and father who died in his own home while performing a routine task.
This case highlights the importance of being cautious at home, as unexpected situations can lead to tragedies even during routine activities. The death of Brian Depledge serves as a reminder of the need for safety in everyday life to avoid similar dramatic incidents.
