“My conscience was gnawing at me a bit. I understood I needed to set an example for my children, to show that their father didn't just abandon his duty.”

The intense pressures of combat also contribute to these decisions. Viktor, who fought in Soledar and Chasiv Yar, suffered burns and injuries during combat, an experience highlighting the harsh conditions that can lead to a soldier's departure. According to current legislation, a criminal case is automatically opened on the third day after an unauthorized absence, underscoring the gravity of the offense in a nation at war.
