After 33 Years, Smartlynx Airlines Shuts Down, Leaving $276 Million in Debt.
The End of Smartlynx Airlines
According to TSN.ua: Smartlynx Airlines has permanently ceased all operations after entering external administration in November 2025 due to financial troubles and bankruptcy. The carrier's final financial crisis emerged in the fall of 2025, ultimately bringing its 33-year history to a close. Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Riga, the airline had managed to transport over 10 million passengers between 2023 and 2024, but this was not enough to overcome its mounting financial difficulties. At the time of closure, the company left behind debts totaling $276,253,210, along with a tax liability of $580,668 owed to the Latvian government.
Fallout from the Closure
The official announcement of the complete shutdown came on November 24, 2025. Smartlynx Airlines had partnered with a range of clients, including IndiGo, AnadoluJet, Air Transat, and DHL. The company's closure marks a significant event in the aviation sector, signaling the end of an era for a well-known regional carrier. This development carries major implications for the aviation markets in Latvia and neighboring countries. The challenges that brought down Smartlynx highlight broader industry pressures, such as rising operational costs and intensifying competition. These factors may also raise concerns among other airlines facing similar risks amid economic instability and shifting market conditions.
While the absence of Smartlynx Airlines opens up new opportunities for other carriers, it could also reduce consumer choice in the region.
