The severe weather has impacted 15 prefectures, with Niigata, Akita, and Yamagata experiencing a particularly sharp rise in casualties since the storms began.

Niigata Prefecture has suffered the highest death toll, with 12 fatalities. The severe weather, which started on January 20, 2023, in Niigata and neighboring regions, brought snow accumulations reaching roughly two meters in some areas. Akita Prefecture recorded seven deaths, while Yamagata reported five. In total, 393 people were injured, 126 of them seriously; Niigata also had the highest number of severe injuries at 42. Japan's winter months often bring heavy snow to its northern and western coastal regions, but this season's severity has been exceptional.
The snowfall also damaged 14 homes, including three in Niigata and eight in Aomori Prefecture. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Minoru Kihara has urged the public to exercise extreme caution. It is notable that over the six winter months of the previous year, 68 people in Japan died due to winter precipitation.
