Thousands of students are expelled from Ukrainian universities: the reason is absenteeism

According to ТСН: Ukrainian higher education institutions have started actively expelling students for absenteeism, which has occurred against the backdrop of mobilization. This decision is driven by the increasing number of men of conscription age entering universities not so much for education as to obtain a deferment from military service.

Statistics of applicants

According to information, next year a record influx of 55,581 men of conscription age was recorded in universities. In 2025, this figure decreased to 24,819, but remains significant.

Stricter control

Universities have begun to check attendance. Students who do not appear for classes are subject to expulsion.

"All those students who were absent from classes were expelled. And this continues to be done. This is a functioning mechanism. The service has the right to check the presence of students at any level of education. Those who entered not for learning, but to have a deferment, lose this opportunity," said Pipa, emphasizing that such mechanisms already exist.

Increase in the number of students

It should be noted that since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the number of students over the age of 25 has increased eightfold — from 30,000 to 230,000, which indicates a desire to avoid mobilization. Since the beginning, 50,000 students who enrolled with violations have been expelled, but this figure may still change.

Deferment from mobilization

In Ukraine, the right to deferment from mobilization is granted to full-time students if this is their first and continuing education and if they have not served before. When receiving a summons, it is necessary to provide documents about the release to the military commissariat.

This situation highlights the pressing issues of higher education in Ukraine during military operations, when educational institutions are forced to adapt to new conditions. Expelling students can be a serious challenge for the young generation, which seeks to avoid mobilization, but at the same time has the right to education.
