Russian Military Intelligence Agent Convicted
According to TSN.ua: A court has sentenced a Russian military intelligence agent to 14 years in prison for attempting to steal classified documentation related to Ukraine’s T-84BM Oplot tank. In addition to the prison term, the individual was stripped of property rights, with assets set to be confiscated.
Arrest and Investigation
The agent was apprehended in Kharkiv in February 2021. Investigators determined that he was acting on orders from Russia’s GRU, with the primary objective of obtaining secret blueprints and production data for the tank. The operation was uncovered by counterintelligence officers from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) when the agent attempted to hand over decoy documents.
The court found the man guilty of high treason under Article 111, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The investigation was carried out by the SBU in the Kharkiv region, under the supervision of the regional prosecutor’s office. This case highlights the critical role of Ukrainian security forces in countering external threats and safeguarding national interests.
This verdict sends a strong message about Ukraine’s determination to protect its military technologies and information from foreign aggression. – SBU Press Office
The arrest and subsequent punishment demonstrate the effectiveness of Ukraine’s special services in detecting and preventing threats to national security.
