The Semynohy Family Rebuilt Their Home: How a Tank in the Garden Helped Raise 45 Thousand Dollars.
According to ТСН: The story of the Semynohy family from Velyka Dymerka became known to the whole world: on their garden, among cabbage and flowers, stood a damaged Russian tank with the number '13' for almost two years. Now, where the enemy's weapon once stood, sorrel has grown, and the family is celebrating housewarming in their rebuilt home. A TSN correspondent visited the family, who remained steadfast during the war.
Life with a Tank in the Garden
When the Semynohy returned to the liberated village in the spring of 2022, they found that their house had turned into ruins, and a 40-ton 'gift' from the occupiers stood in their garden. They needed to plant vegetables urgently, so they surrounded the Russian tank with flowers, zucchini, and cabbage.
The harvest from the tank turned out to be successful: the family preserved the famous 'occupant' cabbage and gave it away to volunteers. While the tank remained in their possession, the children — Ivanka and Artem — painted its parts and shells. These unique items were sold at auctions by volunteers, and over three years, more than 45 thousand dollars was raised for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including for vehicles, thermal imaging devices, and ammunition.
How TSN and Art Helped Rebuild the Home
The reconstruction of the home in a new location cost the family about 3 million hryvnias. The Semynohy sold what they grew, borrowed money from acquaintances, and received a certificate for an apartment, but the funds were still not enough.
The issue was resolved through publicity, thanks to TSN reports. Employees of the National Art Museum, learning about the situation, organized a charity auction. Artists sold their works to support the family. In particular, the famous TV host and artist Svitlana Leontieva donated two of her paintings for the auction, one of which decorates the Semynohy living room — this painting was chosen by the family as a housewarming gift.
“It is so calm... If we start to bother mom — she will come, look at the painting, and everything will be fine,”the family jokes.
A New Home and New Dreams
Despite the ongoing repairs and the lack of gas in the house (they cook on an electric stove and a propane cylinder), the Semynohy have already settled into their new, bright dwelling. Now, the children have their own rooms: Ivanka's has a window overlooking the garden, and Artem's is decorated with a giant teddy bear and a motorcycle helmet.
Where the tank once stood (the military eventually took it away for scrap), greenery now grows. Despite the December cold, hostess Yuliya treats journalists to fresh sorrel right from the spot where the tank once stood.
The Main Wish by the Christmas Tree
This year, the Semynohy set up a Christmas tree in their new home for the first time. When the lights were turned on, the family made the most important wish — the victory of Ukraine and the return of uncle Lyonya, Yuliya's cousin, from captivity.
“Uncle Lyonya, we know you will come back. I will definitely show you this TSN episode. We love you very much!”Yuliya addressed her brother through the camera.
The Semynohy have proven that where the enemy tank stood, Ukrainian sorrel will always grow, and new, happy homes will arise from the ruins.
