Deadly Incident in Kharkiv

According to TSN.ua: A devastating accident occurred on a Kharkiv water body on March 12, claiming the lives of a 10-year-old and a 17-year-old boy who broke through the ice. Six children were caught in this perilous situation, all of whom were internally displaced from Kupiansk. Thanks to the swift actions of a 40-year-old local resident, four of the children were rescued, though they showed signs of hypothermia and were taken to a hospital.

According to the director of the city's emergency department, the rescuer himself required medical attention after falling ill while attempting to reach a fifth boy. Among the survivors are two boys and two girls. The tragedy unfolded in Kharkiv's Shevchenkivskyi District, and authorities are currently investigating the circumstances.

“The children fell through all at once. Accounts of what happened next vary. The investigation will determine the facts,” said Bohdan Hladkykh.

Winter Water Hazards

In a related incident, the body of a 31-year-old local man was recovered from the Dniester River the following day after he drowned. This event serves as yet another grim reminder of the dangers posed by frozen bodies of water and the critical need for caution on ice.

The Kharkiv tragedy highlights the risks children face, especially during winter when water surfaces freeze over. The involvement of displaced children from Kupiansk also underscores the hardships endured by families forced to flee their homes. Local authorities must prioritize water safety and ramp up public awareness campaigns about the perils of winter conditions.
