The prospect has alarmed officials across the continent, who are scrambling to build or reinforce alternative frameworks aimed at preventing the alliance’s collapse. An anonymous EU official warned, 'NATO is already falling apart,' underscoring the gravity of the situation.

With the alliance’s future in doubt, European nations are ramping up their own defense efforts. The U.K.-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), for instance, functions as a rapid-response group for Northern European countries. Ukraine has now joined an enhanced partnership agreement with the JEF, signaling its push to strengthen defense ties with European states.
