Peace Talks in Abu Dhabi Bring Ukraine, US, and Russia to the Table.
High-Level Talks in Abu Dhabi Focus on Ending the War
According to Novyny.live: High-level talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia commenced in the United Arab Emirates on January 23. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this significant development in the peace process. These negotiations represent a rare direct diplomatic engagement since the full-scale invasion began. The Ukrainian delegation includes:
- Rustem Umerov
- Kyrylo Budanov
- David Arakhamia
- Sergiy Kyslytsya
They will be joined tomorrow by General Gnatov and Vadym Skibitskyi.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the discussions are focused on the specific terms for ending the war. He noted that his team expects to receive at least some answers from Russia during these talks.
"They are talking about the parameters for ending the war. They should now have at least part of the answers from Russia," the President stated.
Providing context for the urgency of these talks, Russian military casualties for December alone were approximately 35,000 personnel, highlighting the severe human cost of the ongoing conflict. Zelenskyy also stressed the need for tangible, positive signals for Ukraine, particularly regarding air defense capabilities:
"We need a positive signal here in Ukraine now, in the real supply for our defenders of the sky."
The agenda for the talks includes the critical issue of supplying missiles for air defense systems, a topic Zelenskyy has already discussed with U.S. President Donald Trump. Furthermore, a proposal for material support for repair brigades is under consideration, which would provide a payment of 20,000 hryvnias per month for each worker in January, February, and March of 2026.
These trilateral negotiations in Abu Dhabi open new avenues for a potential peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine and underscore the vital role of international diplomacy. As participants debate the core issues for ending hostilities, this meeting could mark a pivotal step toward reducing regional tension. However, given the high casualty figures and continued fighting, the outcome of these discussions will be crucial for determining the future course of events.
