According to ТСН: In Chernihiv, law enforcement officers arrested a man suspected of destroying a menorah - a symbol of Hanukkah celebrations.

The incident occurred near the local drama theater. According to the police, the perpetrator toppled the menorah and left a "message calling for the violation of citizens' equality."

As a result of the investigation, it was established that the crime was committed by a 22-year-old resident of Chernihiv. After the act, he fled to another region, where he was hiding. The police quickly found and arrested him.

The man has been charged under part 1 of article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which deals with inciting national, racial, or religious hatred.

For his actions, he could face a fine ranging from two hundred to five hundred non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens (3400 UAH - 8500 UAH), or deprivation of liberty for up to five years, or imprisonment for up to three years.

It is worth noting that earlier, at the beginning of 2025, this man had already damaged a Hanukkah menorah installed on the ruins of a synagogue.

What is Hanukkah?

Hanukkiah or Hanukkah menorah is a lamp that is lit for eight days during the Hanukkah holiday. For Jews, lighting the menorah symbolizes spiritual resilience and the victory of holiness over impurity, light over darkness.

The Hanukkah holiday in Judaism represents the rededication of Jerusalem and the reconsecration of the Second Temple, which occurred at the beginning of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.

This incident has caused significant concern in society as it indicates a rise in cases of enmity based on religious affiliation. Authorities and public organizations continue to work on ensuring peace and tolerance in Ukrainian society.
