This animal is one of the boldest small predators in Ukraine's forests. Recognizable by its slender, elongated body, short legs, and small rounded ears, the weasel is a distinctive member of the local fauna. The Chernobyl area, abandoned by humans, has become an unexpected sanctuary for wildlife.

In winter, its fur turns completely white, providing camouflage against the snow, while in summer it shifts to a two-tone pattern of brown back and white belly. This seasonal adaptation is a survival mechanism for varying environmental conditions. The weasel is an agile hunter, skilled at climbing trees, running swiftly, and swimming proficiently, which allows it to effectively pursue rodents.

The Predatory Habits of the Weasel

This fierce hunter can catch between 10 to 15 rodents in a single day, and sometimes even more, demonstrating its high activity level and predatory instinct. Rather than building its own home, the weasel occupies the abandoned burrows or hollows of other animals, making it highly mobile in its search for food. When it catches more than it can immediately eat, it stores the surplus for later, a strategy for surviving lean periods. The weasel is also known to emit loud shrieks to defend itself from danger, showcasing its determination and courage in the struggle for survival.
