Four Key Reasons Behind Stricter Power Outage Schedules in Kyiv.
Ukraine’s Electricity Supply Situation
According to TSN.ua: Power outage schedules have been tightened in Ukraine, particularly in Kyiv, due to a combination of factors including reduced generation, rising consumption, unscheduled repairs at nuclear power units, and a drop in electricity imports. This situation stems from several challenges that have significantly strained the country’s energy system.
Why Electricity Production Has Declined
Solar farm efficiency has dropped from 22% to 7% of installed capacity, cutting daily electricity output by roughly 800 MWh. A 1°C drop in the average daily temperature has added about 200 MWh to consumption. Additionally, two nuclear power plant units have entered maintenance earlier than planned.

Hungary has also halted electricity exports due to its own shortfall, while Slovakia terminated an emergency dispatch assistance agreement. Combined, these factors have reduced available capacity by nearly 1.6 GWh.

As a result, Ukraine’s energy sector remains under significant pressure, and consumers should prepare for possible power interruptions in the near term. Major difficulties in electricity generation and supply, alongside growing consumption amid changing weather conditions, highlight the need to adapt the country’s energy strategy. Future steps to ensure grid stability may include:
- expanding renewable energy capacity;
- securing new electricity import routes.
