Buckwheat and Rice Fly Off Shelves in Kyiv: What’s Behind the Price Surge.
Kyiv Shoppers Snap Up Buckwheat and Rice
According to TSN.ua: Supermarkets across Kyiv are seeing a rush on buckwheat and rice, with supplies running low as demand spikes. As of March, the average price for buckwheat has climbed to 54.07 UAH per kilogram, while rice now costs 59.99 UAH per kilogram. Even buckwheat priced between 56.99 and 59.99 UAH has been bought out quickly.
For context, the average price of buckwheat stood at 47.87 UAH per kilogram in January, and last spring it was around 33.02 UAH per kilogram. Several key factors are driving the increase:
- energy costs;
- logistics;
- packaging;
- inflation;
- reduced planting areas.
Experts point to broader pressures. 'The price of buckwheat is rising not because of a shortage today, but because packaging has become expensive due to higher electricity costs and blackouts,' explains Oleg Pendzyn.
This trend is worrying consumers and could have implications for the country’s food security.
Economic Ripple Effects of Rising Prices
The price hikes for buckwheat and rice highlight a wider economic challenge tied to growing production and logistics expenses. Such sharp increases in staple goods may shift consumer habits and heighten social tensions. Monitoring these market changes is critical for food security, as they could significantly impact Ukraine’s economy and the well-being of its citizens.
