Under Postal Square, the site of the Baptism of Rus has been discovered: what the archaeologists found.
According to ТСН: In the center of Kyiv, under Postal Square, archaeologists have made remarkable discoveries from the times of Kyivan Rus. These findings could significantly change our perception of the Baptism of Rus and its historical significance.
Unique Discoveries
One of the most important finds was the remains of the Lyatski Gates — an ancient gate mentioned in the "Tale of Bygone Years". While only a reconstruction exists on the surface, the genuine foundations preserved underground are over a thousand years old.
The chief archaeologist of Kyiv, Mykhailo Sahaidak, who is known for discovering the "Kyiv Pompeii" in Podil, confirmed that under modern city lies a vast ancient estate, including a building from the times of Volodymyr the Great with an area of about 900 m².
“Not every country can boast of having places related to such significant events as the Baptism of Rus. Postal Square is such a place.”
Preservation of History
These important monuments were nearly destroyed. During Yanukovych's time, business structures tried to build an underground shopping center here. The historical site was saved thanks to mass protests and the voice of Maidan. After the Revolution of Dignity, the Verkhovna Rada decided to create a national archaeological museum in this area.
Among the finds are ancient customs and princely seals that attest to the functioning of a trading harbor. Hydrologist Viktor Vyshnevskyi found out that the chronicle river Pochayna was actually an 8-10 kilometer sleeve of the Dnipro.
Historical Significance
It was in this ancient harbor at Postal Square that important events of the baptism of the Kyivans took place in 988. As Sahaidak notes, all major events of the first Christianization occurred right here, as it was the most convenient place for entering the water, according to Vyshnevskyi.
Currently, there are other changes ongoing in Kyiv: a market in Borshchahivka is being demolished, about which videos with many concerned people and police have appeared online. This concerns a location on Zodchykh Street.
There are places where time seems to have stopped, where the space feels its own silence, and every alley breathes history. One of such places is the Sharivskyi Palace and park, better known as the Sugar Palace.
Discoveries under Postal Square shed new light on important moments in the history of Kyivan Rus. Understanding these archaeological finds will help to delve deeper into the culture and heritage that shaped the capital of Ukraine.
