Holocaust Victims Remembered in Lviv as Zelenskyy Warns Against Indifference.
Holocaust Memorial Event Held in Lviv
According to UATV: A ceremony to honor the victims of the Holocaust was held in Lviv on January 27, 2023. Participants prayed, lit candles, and laid flowers at the monument to the victims of the ghetto. The Lviv Ghetto, which existed during the Second World War, was the largest within the borders of the USSR and the third largest in Eastern Europe. Over its two-year existence, more than 136,000 Jews passed through the Lviv Ghetto. This remembrance occurs as Ukraine continues to defend its own sovereignty against a foreign invasion, underscoring the enduring relevance of such historical lessons.
Commemoration in Kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also honored Holocaust victims in Kyiv. He visited Babyn Yar, the site of Nazi mass shootings, where the memorial event was attended by representatives of the President's Office, the government, rabbis, foreign ambassadors, and officials from international organizations.
“Hatred toward one people never stops by itself if others remain indifferent.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Commemorating Holocaust victims in Ukraine is of great importance for preserving historical memory and maintaining societal unity. These events not only recall tragic chapters of the past but also encourage active struggle against antisemitism and other forms of hatred. This is especially relevant today, when it is crucial to resist attempts to divide society based on nationality or religion.
