Lviv bans diving on Epiphany: city authorities call for spiritual celebration.
According to ТСН: The city of Lviv has decided to abandon the traditional diving into water bodies during Epiphany. City authorities urge residents to refrain from bathing on January 6 and to focus on the spiritual celebration of the Theophany.
The city administration officially bans immersion in water bodies within Lviv, emphasizing that such rituals are not part of local traditions and can be dangerous to people's health.
In recent years, no areas for bathing in cold water have been prepared in Lviv. The main focus during the celebrations is on the religious significance of the Theophany rather than on extreme fortification activities. A representative of the Lviv City Council, Yevhen Boyko, noted that the myth of 'washing away sins' with cold water does not correspond to local traditions and can pose health risks.
Main events on January 6 in Lviv
- 10:00, Rynok Square — solemn water blessing with the participation of military chaplains;
- 11:00, 'Horykhovyi Hai' Park (Volodymyra Velykoho St, 14-A) — festive prayer and water blessing without bathing.
Doctors and rescuers warn: there is not a single water body in Lviv that is certified for safe winter diving. Rescue posts at usual locations will not be deployed.
What are the risks for people
negative impact of cold water on immunity;
contraindications for those with cardiovascular, kidney diseases, diabetes or those with colds;
high risk of accidents due to lack of specialists and safe zones.
The city authorities urge Lviv residents to refrain from dangerous dives and to focus on prayer, festive activities and safe celebration of Epiphany.
Given the dangers associated with winter bathing, the city administration emphasizes the importance of preserving the health of residents. At the same time, the celebration of the Theophany offers broad opportunities for spiritual unification, which can be significant for the community, focusing on traditions and religious rites.
