Shelducks Overwinter in Tuzly Lagoons National Park

According to TSN.ua: Thousands of large, strikingly patterned shelducks have been recorded wintering in Tuzly Lagoons National Park, forming massive flocks since December. The Common Shelduck (Tadorna tadorna) is a waterfowl species that uniquely nests in the abandoned burrows of predatory mammals, with a typical clutch size of 8–9 eggs. These ducks are a notable sight in the park's coastal wetlands.

In Ukraine, the shelduck is a nesting, migratory, and wintering species, found primarily in coastal regions. An adult shelduck weighs between 0.9 and 1.6 kg, measures 58–71 cm in length, and boasts an impressive wingspan of up to 123 cm. The national population is estimated at 1,400–1,700 breeding pairs, highlighting its significance for the local ecosystem.

Distribution and Ecological Significance of Shelducks

The species' range extends from Scandinavia and the Mediterranean to Iran, Mongolia, and northern China. The European population is estimated at 42,000–65,000 breeding pairs, according to Dr. Ivan Rusev, a Doctor of Biological Sciences and a staff member at the national park.

The successful wintering of shelducks in Tuzly Lagoons National Park is a key indicator of a stable regional ecosystem capable of supporting diverse birdlife. As a vital component of wetland habitats, the presence of shelducks signals ecosystem health and underscores the necessity of preserving these natural environments. The conservation of species like the shelduck is critical for maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance in Ukraine, especially given the ongoing environmental pressures in the region.
