Childless Women in Russia to Be Referred to Psychologists Under New Health Ministry Order.
Russia Introduces Controversial Health Screening Policy
According to TSN.ua: Starting in 2024, Russia's Ministry of Health has approved guidelines that require women who express a desire not to have children to be referred to a medical psychologist. This policy is part of an expanded medical examination program that includes new questions in patient questionnaires.
Survey Questions and Gender Differences
The final question for women in the survey asks: 'How many children would you like to have, including those already born?' If a woman answers '0,' she will be sent to a medical psychologist for further consultation. In contrast, men will be asked: 'How many children would you like to have (including existing ones) given your current life circumstances?' Notably, the guidelines do not mandate a referral to a psychologist for men who indicate they do not want children.
These health policy changes are designed to prevent elective abortions and boost birth rates as the aggressor state of Russia faces a demographic crisis. Authorities are seeking new ways to encourage population growth and promote family values.
This initiative reflects the Russian government's concern over declining birth rates, which could have serious consequences for the country's economy and social structure. As such, these measures may be seen as part of a broader strategy to improve the demographic situation, a critical factor for state stability. At the same time, this policy is likely to spark debate about women's rights and gender equality in society.
