Indonesia Claims World Record for Longest Snake Ever Measured.
A New World Record Emerges from Indonesia
According to TSN.ua: A female reticulated python measuring 23 feet 8 inches (over 7.2 meters) has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest snake ever measured in the wild. The discovery was made in early 2026 in the Maros region of South Sulawesi province, in southwestern Indonesia. A team including conservationist Budi Purwanto and snake charmer Dias Nugraha documented this remarkable specimen. Reticulated pythons are native to Southeast Asia and are renowned for their impressive length, though finding one of this size is exceptionally rare.
This new record-holder surpasses the previous champion, a snake from Borneo documented in 1999, by 25 centimeters (nearly 10 inches). The python weighed 213 pounds (over 96 kilograms). Notably, the snake was measured without sedation, a method which some experts suggest means its relaxed length could theoretically approach 26 feet (almost 8 meters).
The Significance of the Discovery
The recognition of the world's longest snake has garnered international attention. This finding underscores the unique biodiversity of the Indonesian archipelago and highlights the critical importance of field research in natural habitats.
The record is significant from both a scientific and ecological perspective, emphasizing the need to preserve and study natural environments. Acknowledging such achievements can help raise global awareness about unique animal species and their vital roles within ecosystems. Furthermore, news of this discovery may attract tourists and researchers keen to explore Indonesia's rich and endemic flora and fauna.
