Cash Transporters Detained in Hungary

According to TSN.ua: On March 5, Hungarian authorities arrested seven employees of Oschadbank who were transporting large sums of state funds, including gold bars and tens of millions of euros and dollars. During the operation, elite Hungarian counter-terrorism unit TEK conducted the raid. The incident involved the use of a "forced injection" on one of the detainees—a former employee of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

The man who received the injection suffers from diabetes and experienced a hypertensive crisis during the arrest. Hungarian attorney Lorant Horvath confirmed the administration of an injection of unknown content. In total, authorities seized $82.2 million during the detention.

Oschadbank's Response and Political Fallout

Oschadbank has filed a criminal complaint with Hungarian law enforcement agencies. In response, the bank issued a list of demands, including:

  • cancellation of the deportation of those detained;
  • return of the confiscated funds.

This detention occurred just weeks before Hungary's parliamentary elections, scheduled for April 12.

The incident has sparked significant controversy, as the arrest of foreign bank employees—especially on the eve of an election—could influence Hungary's political landscape. The recovery of the seized funds and the legal status of the detainees may become subjects of international negotiations, particularly given the ties between Ukraine and Hungary. It is crucial to monitor how this case unfolds, as it could have lasting implications for bilateral relations between the two nations.
