Budapest Accuses Kyiv of Energy Blockade: Orbán Cites 'Terrorist Tactics' in Escalating Dispute.
Hungary Levels Accusations Against Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Hungarian authorities have charged Ukraine with attempting to impose an energy blockade, alleging that Ukrainian forces are striking Russian gas infrastructure. According to Hungary's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ukrainian military launched 22 attack drones at a Russian compressor station that supplies the TurkStream pipeline.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán asserted that Kyiv is resorting to terrorist methods, declaring that Ukrainians have 'crossed every red line.' He highlighted three prior actions he considers near-terrorism:
- the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines,
- the 2022 shutdown of the Ukrainian section of the gas transit route,
- and disruptions to the Druzhba oil pipeline.
Calling for a firm response, Orbán stated:
“Hungary must act—we need to maintain constant deterrence and surveillance operations.”Meanwhile, European Union leaders failed to persuade Orbán to lift his veto on a loan package for Ukraine, underscoring the growing rift between Budapest and Kyiv.
Worsening Ukraine-Hungary Tensions
This episode reflects deepening friction between Ukraine and Hungary amid the ongoing regional conflict. Hungary's accusations of terrorist tactics could signal shifts in Central and Eastern Europe's political landscape, with potential consequences for energy security and cross-border cooperation. Additionally, Hungary's refusal to back the EU loan may worsen Ukraine's financial strain, already battered by war. As a result, relations between the two nations remain fraught, carrying long-term implications for both countries and their allies.
