Ukraine allowed the exhumation of victims of the Volyn tragedy in Ternopil region.
The process of exhuming the remains of Polish victims of the Volyn tragedy, buried in the former village of Puzhnyky, will begin in April in the Ternopil region. This was reported by RMF FM.
The 'Freedom and Democracy' Foundation, which discovered this burial site two years ago, received permission from the Ukrainian authorities to excavate the remains and conduct further research. The main goal of the exhumation is to identify individuals whose remains were found in a pit near the former cemetery.
Deputy Head of the 'Freedom and Democracy' Foundation, Maciej Danczewicz, noted that after the excavations, the remains will be studied by Polish archaeologists and anthropologists. Experts are already collecting genetic material from the descendants.
'Genetic material will also be collected in a professional manner at the site where the remains are located,' he said.
After the research, it is planned to re-bury the victims and preserve the memory of this place. It is stated that about 80 people died in Puzhnyky.
Ukraine and Poland exchanged lists of places for searching and exhuming the remains of victims of historical conflicts.
Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a 'breakthrough' regarding the exhumations of victims of the Volyn tragedy and noted that a decision has already been made.
It is also worth mentioning that in December of last year, Warsaw and Kyiv achieved 'obvious progress' on issues of historical disagreements between the two countries.
