What We Know About Ukraine’s New Ballistic Capabilities

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine has successfully developed two new ballistic missiles, designated FP-7 and FP-9, capable of reaching distances of up to 850 kilometers. These weapons could pose a direct threat to Moscow as early as this summer. When carrying a warhead load of up to 250 kg, the missiles can cover roughly 300 km. Depending on the target distance, the FP-7 and FP-9 can also be equipped with a warhead weighing as much as 800 kg.

The launch system for these new missiles is the same platform used for the existing Flamingo rockets. On February 27, a video was released showing the first test launch of the FP-7, marking a significant milestone in Ukraine’s military innovation. This development underscores Ukraine’s growing self-sufficiency in advanced weaponry amid the ongoing war.

Denys Shtilerman, chief designer at the company Fire Point, noted that intercepting 20 to 30 such missiles simultaneously would be extremely difficult, even for American-made Patriot air defense systems. His remark highlights the serious strategic challenges these new missiles could create. Shtilerman also added that “everything for the FP-9 is ready except for the engine,” indicating that certain development hurdles remain before full deployment.
