Over 50 Breaches: Humpback Whale Puts on Unprecedented Show for Ukrainian Antarctic Team.

A Rare Spectacle in Antarctic Waters

According to TSN.ua: Members of the 30th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition witnessed an extraordinary event when a humpback whale performed more than 50 consecutive breaches near the Akademik Vernadsky station. This incredible display took place during the expedition's final ocean outings, serving as a dramatic conclusion to their work at the station. Antarctic waters are known for their rich marine life, but such a prolonged and energetic performance by a single whale is highly unusual.

The researchers set out in two boats south of Galindez Island, with one crew working in the area of the Bercelot and Darboux Islands. The whale observation lasted about an hour, allowing the scientists to capture the moment on photo and video, including footage from a drone. Zoia Shvydka, one of the expedition members, noted that

“such a sight was unique even for seasoned researchers.”
