Ukraine's Territorial Gains Outpace Russian Advances, ISW Reports.
Ukraine Regains the Initiative
According to UATV: According to the latest report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukraine's armed forces have now reclaimed more territory than Russian troops have managed to seize. This significant battlefield achievement is underscored by Ukrainian forces liberating over 250 square kilometers of their homeland, demonstrating tangible progress on the front lines. Since January 1, 2026, Ukrainian troops have freed approximately 257 square kilometers, showcasing their active efforts to restore the nation's territorial integrity.
Momentum in 2026
Ukrainian forces achieved a net gain of 33 square kilometers from February 14 to 20, 2026, followed by a further gain of 57 square kilometers from February 21 to 27. This momentum has allowed Ukrainian units to consolidate and strengthen their positions in a relatively short timeframe. For context, previous major gains included 377 square kilometers in June 2023, 257 square kilometers in July 2023, and 1.47 square kilometers in September 2023. Cumulatively, from the start of 2026, Ukraine has now retaken control of 460 square kilometers of territory.
ISW analysts note that 'Ukraine's recent battlefield successes have disrupted Russia's efforts to set conditions for a spring-summer offensive in 2026.' Despite these advances, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has cautioned that
"the situation remains difficult".
The recapture of significant areas points to the growing effectiveness of Ukrainian military operations and an improvement in their frontline posture. However, even with these successes, the overall situation remains tense. Ukrainian leadership continues to stress the necessity of preparedness for future challenges, highlighting the critical importance of strategic planning and readiness for potential enemy offensives in the near future.
