Ukraine severs final ties with Russia and Belarus, canceling 116 agreements.
End of an era: International agreements terminated
According to TSN.ua: Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers has officially terminated 116 international agreements with Russia, Belarus, and those under the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), marking the country’s complete exit from the post-Soviet treaty framework. Specifically, Kyiv ended 25 treaties, denounced three, and withdrew from 88 international pacts.
Among these agreements:
- five involved Russia;
- 23 involved Belarus;
- 87 were CIS-related.
One agreement was a trilateral pact between Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. A key part of this process was President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signing a decree to withdraw from the Agreement on the Protection of State Borders and Maritime Economic Zones.
Government representative Andriy Sybiha stated: 'We must break the last legal ties binding us to Russia, Belarus, and the so-called CIS.'
This decision underscores Ukraine’s determination to fully distance itself from post-Soviet connections and strengthen its sovereignty on the global stage. For an English-speaking audience, this move signals a definitive geopolitical shift as Ukraine continues to align with Western institutions.
Implications for Ukraine’s foreign policy
The move represents a significant step in Ukraine’s foreign policy, highlighting its push for integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures. By withdrawing from these post-Soviet agreements, Ukraine can foster new international partnerships and enhance national security by reducing reliance on former allies. This action reinforces the country’s ongoing commitment to bolstering its independence and sovereignty internationally.
