Ukraine Launches Production of 'Invisibility' Ponchos — Here’s Why Troops Still Lack Them.
Stealth-Based Anti-Thermal Ponchos Now Being Made in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Ukraine has started manufacturing anti-thermal ponchos that use Stealth technology to shield soldiers from thermal imaging sensors. These garments are built from a silver-metallized layer over a nylon base, enabling effective concealment on the battlefield.
The ponchos blend into the surrounding landscape across a wavelength range of 0.75 to 14.0 microns, making them suitable for modern combat conditions. Notably, the fabric remains breathable — a crucial feature for comfort in diverse climates. However, cheaper alternatives can overheat and expose the wearer’s thermal signature in as little as 20 minutes of intense movement.
Obstacles and Opportunities
Despite these technological advances, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence and the Defence Procurement Agency have been slow to place large-scale orders. This hesitation suggests the need for further evaluation of the product’s effectiveness before it can be integrated into military use. Producing anti-thermal ponchos represents a significant step forward in troop protection, but proper state support is essential for full implementation.
Introducing cutting-edge technology into military operations is vital for enhancing defense capabilities and personnel safety. While these ponchos could become a key asset on the battlefield, their successful adoption depends on rigorous testing and assessment. Amid ongoing threats, ensuring that such innovations are both available and effective for Ukrainian forces requires active backing from the government and defense agencies.
