According to ТСН: In Kyiv, law enforcement discovered a new case of fraud under the scheme “your relative is in trouble.” A 21-year-old suspect from Khmelnytskyi region deceived a 79-year-old Kyiv resident, having received over 600 thousand hryvnias from him.

According to the investigation, before the young man visited the pensioner, a call was received from unknown individuals who presented themselves as doctors. They informed that the victim's son had allegedly been involved in a car accident, sustained serious injuries, and required urgent surgery. The scammers also stated that 'the doctor's son' would come for the funds needed for salvation.

Shortly thereafter, a young man arrived at the victim's apartment and received 15 thousand US dollars from him, which is equivalent to over 600 thousand hryvnias.

Only after handing over the money did the pensioner call his real son and find out that he had been deceived.

Law enforcement quickly detained 'the doctor's son' in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. A portion of the funds received — about 100 thousand hryvnias — was seized from the detainee and returned to the victim.

The young man has been charged with fraud, and investigative actions are ongoing to identify all participants in the crime.

Previously, reports had been made about cases where fraudsters in Kyiv swindled valuables totaling 37.5 million hryvnias, posing as “SBU couriers.”

This case once again highlights the danger of fraudulent schemes that target vulnerable categories of the population, such as elderly people. Law enforcement urges everyone to be cautious and not to trust strangers who intend to use emotional pressure to obtain money.
