Unique Dinosaur Tracks Found in Colorado: It Walked in Circles Due to Injury

According to ТСН: In Colorado, USA, paleontologists made an astonishing discovery – they found a rare set of dinosaur tracks in a loop shape. Analysis of 130 footprints suggests that the large creature may have had a serious injury or was trying to evade something.

Scientists believe they have found tracks of a dinosaur that was moving with a limp. These fossilized footprints, preserved in rock for over 150 million years, were discovered at an ancient trackway near the town of Ouray in Colorado.

Importance of the Discovery

The trackway, measuring over 310 feet (about 94 meters), consists of approximately 130 footprints, likely left by a quadrupedal dinosaur from the sauropod group.

“Such long and winding trackways are extremely rare, and this find is undoubtedly 'very rare,'” said Anthony Romilio, a paleontologist from the University of Queensland.

Romilio also emphasized that returning tracks are even rarer. “Trackways that form loops are only known to exist in two places in the world: one in Colorado and one in China. However, the Chinese one was destroyed by a landslide. Thus, this site remains the only preserved loop-shaped dinosaur trackway in the world,” he added.

Unclear Causes of the Dinosaur's Limp

Although researchers could not accurately determine the species of the dinosaur, Romilio noted that during that geological period, present-day Colorado was inhabited by, among others, Camarasaurus and Diplodocus.

“Camarasaurus could be likened to a 'front-wheel drive,' while Diplodocus, on the other hand, resembled a 'rear-wheel drive,'” explained Romilio.

The reasons for the possible limp of the dinosaur remain unclear. It is difficult to say whether it resulted from a confrontation with another predator or a member of its own species.

“Determining whether there were other dinosaurs nearby at that moment is challenging... the assumption that the one who left the tracks might have been evading something seems an attractive yet speculative interpretation,” Romilio said.

Romilio also highlighted that such tracks are formed only during the animals' lifetime and provide a unique insight into their movements, unlike skeletal remains.

He added that the discovery of this unique site was made possible thanks to local residents who had known about it since the mid-1950s. “Only much later was this site officially reported to researchers,” he noted.

Modern Technologies in Research

The significant length of the trackway complicates its study; however, modern digital technologies allow for their analysis with high precision.

Additionally, one of the largest dinosaur track collections in the world, dating back about 210 million years, was found in the Italian Alps. In the Stelvio National Park, nearly 20,000 footprints belonging to herbivorous Plateosaurs weighing up to four tons were discovered over a five-kilometer stretch.

The discovery made in Colorado provides important scientific data about how dinosaurs moved and interacted with their environment. It also demonstrates how unexpected finds can change our understanding of the past. Studying such tracks opens new avenues for research and may help unravel the mysteries surrounding dinosaur life millions of years ago.
