Rare Tawny Owl sighted in the Odessa region: Why the bird is threatened.
According to ТСН: In the village of Andrijewo-Iwanivka in the Beresiwka district, ecologists accidentally stumbled upon the tawny owl in the darkness, thanks to its loud voice.
This was reported by the State Ecological Inspection of the Southwestern District on their Facebook page.
What you should know about the tawny owl
The tawny owl, also known as the homestay owl, is a small owl that, despite its name, does not live in houses. Nevertheless, this bird likes to nest near humans: on roofs, under the eaves of barns, in abandoned buildings, or in the hollows of old trees.
Its appearance is hard to confuse with anything else:
flat head;
large yellow eyes that stare at you 'reproachfully';
characteristic white 'eyebrows' and 'chin'
Why it is useful and interesting
This bird is a true helper for farmers and gardeners. It hunts beetles, butterflies, and especially small rodents to control their population.
A unique 'superpower' of the owl is its neck: it can turn its head almost 270 degrees, allowing it to see everything around without moving its body.
'During the day, the owl can sit motionless for hours and remains almost invisible. It is mainly active at night,' the ecologists report.
Conservation status
Although the tawny owl is widespread throughout Ukraine, it needs protection. This species is protected by the Bern Convention and the CITES agreement. In some regions of Ukraine, such as Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk, it is even listed in the regional Red Books.
In conclusion, it is worth noting that a careful attitude towards species like the tawny owl plays an important role in the preservation of biodiversity. Ecologists urge everyone to be attentive to the environment and support efforts to protect these unique birds. Recent incidents involving feathered animals, such as the goose in Uzhhorod, remind us how closely our lives are intertwined with nature.
