Police Fail to Detain Attackers Who Assaulted Soldier After Traffic Accident.
Incident in the Ternopil Region
According to TSN.ua: In the Kremenets district of Ternopil Oblast, a Ukrainian soldier named Mykola, who has been defending the country since 2015, was severely beaten following a collision involving a quad bike. Two visibly intoxicated men assaulted him, yet police took no action to detain the attackers. Shockingly, the soldier was also offered bribes in exchange for not filing an official complaint. This case highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of military personnel, who face threats both on the front lines and within their own communities.
During the altercation, one of the assailants rushed at Mykola and began punching him in the head. The serviceman managed to dodge the blows and wrestle his attacker to the ground. Despite witness testimony confirming the assault, police did not detain the men and later reclassified the case as 'hooliganism committed by a group of individuals'.
Investigation and Public Reaction
The court has imposed a measure of restraint on the attackers, ordering them under round-the-clock house arrest. In a related development, the deputy head of the Kremenets Territorial Recruitment Center (TCC) was detained for accepting a $3,000 bribe. The official had demanded the money in exchange for updating military registration documents.
Witnesses to the assault have expressed deep concern over the apparent impunity enjoyed by the attackers.
"These people seem to get away with a lot," noted Sofia, one of the eyewitnesses.Investigator Vitaliy Hryshchuk from the Kremenets district police department commented on the situation but refused to disclose the details of the suspects' explanations.
The incident and the police's response have sparked public alarm, as soldiers defending the nation are confronting violence not only from external enemies but also from within the country. This situation underscores the critical need to protect the rights of servicemen and women fulfilling their duties during wartime. Without a proper response from law enforcement to such acts of violence, public trust in the justice system erodes. It also calls into question the effectiveness of measures intended to ensure the safety of military personnel who risk their lives for national defense.
