WHO Braces for Worst-Case Nuclear Disaster Scenario—Effects Could Linger for Decades.
Nuclear Threat Landscape
According to TSN.ua: The World Health Organization (WHO) is actively preparing for the possibility of a nuclear catastrophe arising from the armed conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Monitoring the fallout from strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, the agency is conducting staff training and drafting guidance for governments and the public. Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, warned that
“the worst-case scenario is a nuclear accident. And that is what worries us most. The consequences could be catastrophic for the region and the world, and would be felt for decades.”
Humanitarian Toll of the Conflict
So far, the WHO has detected no signs of radioactive contamination, but the situation remains highly volatile. Since hostilities escalated in late February, dozens of attacks on medical personnel and hospitals have been recorded. These actions have driven severe humanitarian consequences, including:
- strikes on healthcare infrastructure;
- shortages of essential medicines;
- rising civilian casualties.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes, further complicating access to critical medical care.
Beyond immediate injuries, the conflict could trigger serious long-term public health issues. Potential problems include lung and skin damage, increased cancer rates, and lasting psychological trauma. These risks underscore the urgent need for international action to prevent further escalation and protect regional health.
The situation remains deeply alarming, as the armed conflict threatens to spiral into a major humanitarian disaster. The WHO is highlighting the severe implications of the nuclear threat, calling on the international community to take decisive steps to curb further violence. It is essential that all involved governments and global organizations prioritize civilian protection and ramp up humanitarian aid amid the growing tensions.
