IAEA Initiates Talks After Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Loses Power from Dniprovska Line.
Latest Developments on the Occupation of Zaporizhzhia NPP
According to TSN.ua: On March 24, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost its connection to the 750 kV Dniprovska transmission line, leaving it reliant solely on the backup Ferrosplavna-1 line. In response, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has opened discussions with both Ukraine and Russia to negotiate a localized ceasefire that would allow repairs to the damaged power line. According to the IAEA press office,
'The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost its connection to the Dniprovska transmission line.'This incident underscores the fragile state of the plant's external power supply, which is critical for reactor cooling and safety systems.
Earlier, on February 27, the IAEA had announced a partial truce between Ukraine and Russia, during which a 330 kV backup power line to the Zaporizhzhia plant was restored. In early March, the Ferrosplavna-1 line was also brought back online following repair work that took over three weeks on a damaged section. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized that the agency is actively working to establish conditions that ensure safety and stability in the region.
Ongoing Tensions in the Region
The situation around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant remains tense, as restoring a stable power supply is vital for the facility's safety. The IAEA continues its diplomatic efforts between the conflicting parties to prevent further escalation and maintain stability in an area where active hostilities persist. The restoration of transmission lines and the security of the plant could significantly affect Ukraine's energy landscape and the broader region.
