Arrest Made in Zakarpattia Over Large Weapons Stash

According to TSN.ua: On March 27, law enforcement officers in the Zakarpattia region detained 52-year-old Andriy Suvorin, also known as 'Moskál', on suspicion of illegal weapons possession. Suvorin had previously served as an aide to the Ukrainian Member of Parliament, Mykhailo Lania. A search of his residence uncovered a significant arsenal of firearms and ammunition. This arrest highlights ongoing concerns about the illicit arms trade in Ukraine, a country under martial law where weapon proliferation is a critical security issue.

Seized Arsenal Contents

The search operation yielded an extensive weapons cache, which included:

  • A handheld anti-tank grenade launcher
  • AK-74 and AKMS assault rifles
  • A Shpagin submachine gun
  • Four combat grenades
  • Two rifles
  • Two pistols
  • 14 assault rifle magazines
  • A drum magazine
  • Spare parts for automatic weapons
  • A bayonet knife
  • Six silencers
  • Six knives
  • Smoke grenades
  • Explosive packages
  • Over 1,300 rounds of ammunition of various calibers

Police stated that a 'serious threat to the life and safety of citizens has been prevented: the arsenal could have been used to commit serious crimes, including terrorist acts or armed attacks.' A court is set to decide on a pre-trial restraint measure for the detainee on March 2. The scale of this seizure underscores the persistent challenges Ukrainian authorities face in securing weapons and preventing their criminal use during a time of national conflict.
