Zelenskyy Holds Emergency Energy Meeting as Kyiv Heating Crisis Persists.
Kyiv's Energy Crisis
According to TSN.ua: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened an emergency meeting on the nation's energy situation, focusing on Kyiv where approximately 50 residential buildings remain without heat. As of the morning of January 17, these buildings in the Ukrainian capital were still without heating due to damage from a Russian attack that occurred over a week ago. This disruption comes during a harsh winter, compounding the challenges for residents.
In response to the ongoing energy crisis, a state of emergency will be declared for Ukraine's energy sector. The President has given specific instructions to resolve the heating outages for the affected buildings in Kyiv. The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine has been appointed to lead efforts to provide support to the impacted population.
Government Response and Civilian Support
The government also announced the formation of a permanent coordination headquarters to manage the situation in Kyiv. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for its rapid deployment of additional support centers and the expansion of the emergency 112 hotline services.
The declaration of a state of emergency underscores the severity of the situation facing Kyiv following the recent attacks. The lack of heating during winter poses significant risks and hardships for residents, making urgent support and coordinated action critically important. The newly established headquarters aims to ensure an effective and unified response to the challenges confronting the capital.
