Zelenskyy Tells UK Parliament: Iran’s Drone Costs $50,000, but Taking It Down Requires a $4 Million Missile.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy Addresses the British Parliament
According to TSN.ua: Speaking before the UK Parliament, Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged global leaders to confront the growing threat posed by low-cost drone technology. He highlighted the dangerous partnership between Russia and Iran, warning that its consequences reach far beyond Ukraine. The Ukrainian president noted that Iran has been developing its drone program for many years, and that Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles began appearing in Russian arsenals roughly three years ago.
Zelenskyy pointed out a stark economic imbalance: an Iranian drone costs around $50,000, while the missile required to destroy it is priced at approximately $4 million. This vast cost disparity creates major difficulties for nations trying to defend themselves against such aerial threats. He reminded the audience that Ukraine has suffered two Russian invasions over the past decade, underscoring the persistent aggression from its neighbor.
Emerging Security Challenges
The president also revealed that Russian components were found in Shahed-type drones as early as the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He called for a fundamental rethinking of security strategies, stating that
“the new reality demands a reassessment of our approaches to security.”
Zelenskyy issued a stark warning:
“If evil prevails, it will be able to strike anywhere in the world. No oceans or mountains will provide protection.”
He stressed that “regimes like Russia’s are finding new ways to wage war” and urged the international community to take decisive action against these threats. His address served as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for global cooperation in the face of evolving military technologies.
Zelenskyy’s speech before the British Parliament underscored the pressing challenge posed by modern warfare innovations, particularly drones. The Russia-Iran collaboration in this domain threatens global security and demands coordinated international responses. As military technologies increasingly bypass conventional defense systems, new security frameworks and collective efforts are essential to prevent aggression from spreading beyond any single region.
