Tribute to the Defenders of Donetsk Airport
According to Novyny.live: On January 20, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy paid tribute to the Ukrainian soldiers who heroically defended the Donetsk Airport for 242 days under relentless fire and encirclement. This prolonged battle in the early stages of the conflict became a powerful symbol of Ukrainian resilience and courage in the fight for sovereignty.
Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's military intelligence, recalled the extraordinary feats of these troops who continued to fight for their country against overwhelming odds. President Zelenskyy, alongside Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendrias, honored the memory of the fallen Ukrainian soldiers in Kyiv, acknowledging their immense sacrifice in defense of their homeland.
“They were called cyborgs, but they were simply demonstrating the best of the Ukrainian character, the Ukrainian heart, the Ukrainian spirit: to never surrender, to fight the occupier, and to amaze the world with what Ukraine is capable of.”
These words affirmed the indomitable will and determination of the defenders, whose actions have left a permanent mark on the nation's history.
The Significance of Remembrance and Support
Honoring the memory of the Donetsk Airport defenders reflects not only respect for their struggle but also underscores the vital role of historical remembrance amid ongoing challenges. These commemorations highlight the necessity of recognizing and supporting the military personnel who continue to fight for Ukraine's territorial integrity against persistent aggression. Such acts serve as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made for independence and foster national unity and solidarity with those on the front lines.
