Skeleton of a Medieval Knight with Crouzon Syndrome: A Unique Find in Spain.
According to ТСН: Archaeologists have discovered the skeleton of a middle-aged man with two stab wounds to the head and a shattered knee, indicating that he died in battle.
The skeleton was found in the castle of Sorita de los Canes in central Spain. This castle belonged to the Order of Calatrava from the 13th to the 15th century — an organization that united knights and monks engaged in military service.
Research on the Skeleton
Further research showed that the man had an unusually long and narrow head. Scientists believe that this could have been the result of a rare genetic disorder that typically leads to death in childhood.
The man was buried in a wooden coffin, which had significantly decayed by the time of the excavations, and many of his bones had also decomposed. Analysis showed that he was 45 years old at the time of his death, and muscle markers on the bones indicated an active lifestyle. However, researchers found that three cranial sutures — the connections between the bones of the skull — had closed prematurely, leading to a deformation of his head.
Crouzon Syndrome
Since the medieval knight was affected only in the skull and other parts of the skeleton were unharmed, researchers believe that Crouzon syndrome may have been identified. Such finds during excavations are rare.
Recent excavations in Turkey have also revealed the largest necropolis in Anatolia, dating back over 2200 years. This discovery confirms the existence of the ancient city of Colossae, mentioned by the Apostle Paul.
These findings underscore the importance of archaeological research, which allows us to uncover new pages of history. The skeleton of the knight from the castle of Sorita de los Canes provides valuable information about life and conditions of military service in medieval Spain, while the discoveries in Anatolia expand our understanding of ancient civilizations in the region.
