Zaporizhzhia Drone Strike Kills ATO Veteran Couple.
Drone Attack in Zaporizhzhia
According to TSN.ua: A married couple, Serhii and Yuliia Smielovi, were killed in a drone attack on Zaporizhzhia on January 20. They were in their car next to their home when it was struck by a 'Shahed' drone. The couple, who had been together for 25 years, leave behind two children: their 22-year-old son, Sashko, and their daughter, Sofiia. The ongoing Russian invasion has seen frequent drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, causing devastating civilian casualties.
A Family's Loss
Serhii Smielov was an ATO veteran, having served from 2014 to 2016, during which he sustained serious injuries. His death is a profound loss for his family and community. According to Viktoriia Horobets, a close friend of the family, the couple had planned to visit Serhii's mother that day and had stopped at home to pick up some items and feed their cat and fish.
"But I still hoped that someone was in the house, that they were in the house," - Viktoriia Horobets.
In the wake of the tragedy, the children's grandmother has assumed temporary guardianship of Sofiia, highlighting the critical need for family support. The deaths of Serhii and Yuliia Smielovi serve as another painful reminder of the war's human cost and its relentless impact on ordinary lives. This incident underscores the broader tragedy of the conflict in Ukraine, which continues to claim civilian lives and tear families apart, emphasizing the urgent need for sustained international support and efforts to secure peace.
