Smuggling Draft-Age Men for €15,000: Criminal Ring Busted in Bukovina.
Authorities Dismantle Organized Crime Network in Western Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: A criminal enterprise operating in the Bukovina region has been uncovered for smuggling military-age men out of the country. The operation was orchestrated by a 43-year-old resident of Chernivtsi Oblast, who led a group of six other individuals. According to law enforcement, the smugglers moved men through forest routes into Romania.
The network charged between €5,000 and €15,000 per person for their illegal services. Investigators documented at least four separate smuggling incidents occurring from November 2025 through March 2026. The suspects' total illicit earnings exceeded €200,000.
Police Crackdown and Legal Consequences
During the operation, authorities detained over 20 draft evaders, including six men who were waiting to be smuggled at the time of the raid. Law enforcement carried out 40 authorized searches as part of the investigation. If convicted, the suspects face 7 to 9 years in prison, along with confiscation of their assets.
This case highlights ongoing efforts by Ukrainian authorities to combat organized crime, particularly amid the challenges posed by the current wartime mobilization. The discovery sends a strong message to others considering similar illegal activities.
The dismantling of this criminal group demonstrates that law enforcement is intensifying its fight against illegal schemes that could undermine national security.
With martial law in effect across Ukraine, strict compliance with mobilization laws is critical—making such smuggling operations both criminal and dangerous to public order. The crackdown also serves as a warning to potential offenders that they cannot operate with impunity.
