How Long Will the War in Ukraine Last? Experts Weigh In

According to TSN.ua: According to analysts, the conflict in Ukraine is expected to persist for a minimum of three additional years, driven by economic pressures and internal developments within Russia. Military expert Oleh Zhdanov points out that Moscow is recycling old ultimatums, while combat operations are shifting into a new phase focused on striking rear-echelon infrastructure.

The war shows no signs of a quick resolution. Zhdanov estimates the fighting could last at least two more years, with internal Russian processes potentially dragging on for a decade. The prolonged nature of the conflict is tied to economic and political factors that are gradually losing stability. Europe has already budgeted financial support through 2026–2027, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Frontline Dynamics and Evolving Tactics

Russian command recognizes the difficulty of directly storming fortified positions in the Donbas region. Currently, combat activity there remains at minimal intensity. Zhdanov notes that 'the main battle is unfolding inside the countries—it’s about destroying economic potential and logistical support.'

Fighting in Ukraine is entering a new stage, with strikes increasingly targeting rear infrastructure.

“We are hitting chemical plants, damaging aircraft factories, and destroying military infrastructure facilities,” Zhdanov says.
These actions signal a tactical shift that could have serious implications for Russia’s military capabilities.

Zhdanov also states, 'we are inflicting significant damage on Russia’s economy, and their situation with equipment and weapons is gradually worsening.' These factors could influence the overall course and duration of the war. Forecasts suggest the conflict may stretch on for years, and that 'Putin will not resort to general mobilization under any circumstances, as it could trigger a social explosion in the Russian Federation.'

Given all these factors, experts remain cautious in their assessments. As Zhdanov remarks,

“it’s hard to say whether such statements have a real basis.”
However, it is clear that the war in Ukraine continues to be a critical issue for both national security and international politics.

The prolonged conflict, which could last several more years, threatens not only regional stability but also raises concerns on the global stage. The increasing intensity of combat, especially in rear areas, points to an evolution in Russia’s military strategy, which may impact its economic capacity and resources.

At the same time, European funding commitments through 2026–2027 highlight the seriousness of support for Ukraine during this crisis. As a result, the situation in Ukraine will remain a focal point for the international community, given the conflict’s potential for long-lasting and far-reaching consequences.
