EU Braces for Talks with Russia: European Council President Costa’s Key Remarks.
Brussels Maps Out Its Ukraine Strategy
According to TSN.ua: European Council President António Costa has made it clear that the European Union backs Washington’s peace efforts concerning the war in Ukraine. At the same time, he stressed that the bloc must prepare itself for the possibility of direct negotiations with Moscow. With Hungary currently blocking new aid packages for Kyiv, the EU faces the dual challenge of maintaining economic pressure on Russia while continuing to support Ukraine.
Diplomatic Moves and the EU’s Next Steps
The most recent round of peace talks took place last February in Geneva. However, a follow-up meeting scheduled for Abu Dhabi was postponed indefinitely, with no new date announced. Costa underscored the need for the EU to remain ready to push forward in the pursuit of a just and lasting peace. He stated:
“If negotiations do not succeed, the EU must be prepared to continue its efforts and seek a path toward a fair and enduring peace.” - António Costa
These remarks from the European Council President highlight the bloc’s active role in trying to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and underscore the importance of international cooperation in achieving peace. Meanwhile, Hungary’s obstruction of aid reveals internal divisions within the EU that could complicate its collective response.
The EU’s endorsement of U.S.-led peace initiatives and its readiness to engage with Russia signal a desire to strike a balance between pressuring the aggressor and ensuring regional stability.
