According to TSN.ua: At the "Europe 2026" conference held in Berlin, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot floated the possibility of Canada joining the European Union. While Ottawa currently has no plans to pursue membership, the suggestion has sparked debate amid rising tensions between Canada and the United States.
Public Opinion and Official Stance
Nine countries are currently official EU candidates. Meanwhile, a 2025 survey found that 44% of Canadians support the idea of joining the bloc. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized that the country is focused on deepening its strategic partnership with the EU, stating:
“The short answer is no. That is not our goal and not the path we are taking.” – Mark Carney
Although the prospect of Canadian EU membership continues to be discussed, the government’s official position remains unchanged: prioritizing stronger ties with the EU without pursuing full integration into its structures.
This discussion reflects shifting global geopolitical dynamics, as nations explore new strategic alliances and partnerships in response to modern challenges.
