Ukrainians will have to return state payments for children: in which cases

According to ТСН: Some Ukrainian families who received state assistance for children may find themselves in a situation where they need to return already paid funds.

The Pension Fund of Ukraine explained under what circumstances this may happen.

Those required to return state funds may include those who did not report changes in their property status, such as the purchase of real estate, a car, or a significant increase in income. This especially applies to large families, where one of the parents received a high-paying job but did not declare it.

Reasons for the cancellation of payments include relocating without notifying the social protection authorities or losing the status of a large family.

Situations that lead to the return of funds

The legislation defines more than 10 situations in which social payments can not only be suspended but also declared invalid.

Among them:

  • revocation of parental rights

  • spending funds for unintended purposes (the child is not provided for)

  • the child was removed from the family, even without legal deprivation of rights

  • placement of the child in round-the-clock care in an institution or boarding school

  • the child is under full state support

  • parents or guardians sentenced to imprisonment

  • the recipient or child died

  • the family itself submitted an application to terminate assistance

If social protection agencies find that assistance was provided unjustifiably, they send a notification of the amount to be returned.

Scenarios for returning funds

Operations may occur under three scenarios:

  • Voluntary return - the recipient independently returns the funds

  • Automatic deduction - a 20% reduction in monthly assistance until full repayment

  • Compulsory collection - through the court and enforcement service

Earlier it was reported that pregnant unemployed women, women who are not insured, as well as certain categories of military personnel, students, and women laid off due to the liquidation of the enterprise, are entitled to state assistance in case of pregnancy and childbirth.

This situation highlights the importance of transparency in financial matters, as evasion of declaration may lead to serious consequences. Families are advised to carefully monitor changes in their financial status to avoid misunderstandings with social protection authorities.
