Will there be additional days off for Christmas and New Year

Christmas in Ukraine has the status of a national holiday. Although Eastern Rite believers traditionally celebrated it on January 7, the country has switched to celebrating December 25 according to the New Julian and Gregorian styles.

In 2025, Christmas falls on Thursday, and this day is officially considered a holiday, so employees receive an additional day off.

New Year 2025 will be celebrated by Ukrainians on the night of Thursday, as December 31 falls on a Wednesday.

However, since February 2022, a state of martial law has been in effect in Ukraine, which changes the rules regarding holiday non-working days. During this period, additional days off are not scheduled, even official holidays do not guarantee a break.

According to the Law of Ukraine “On the Organization of Labor Relations under Martial Law” No. 2136-IX, as of March 2022, new rules are in effect that allow employers to involve employees in work during holidays. This means that the concept of holidays and non-working days does not apply, and workers may work on these days on general payment terms.

However, private sector employers may independently decide to grant their employees an additional day off, and this remains at their discretion.

Thus, December 2025 promises to be filled with holidays and important dates. Despite the difficult circumstances, Ukrainians will have the opportunity to celebrate and commemorate significant events, although some of them may take place in non-standard conditions due to the ongoing martial law. It is important to be prepared for changes in work schedules and holiday days.
